“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” – Joshua 1:9 ESV
I remember when six years ago the Lord encouraged me to start a business. I had no idea how I would do it. To be quite honest, I was struck with fear. I did not know how I would accomplish this new thing God was sending me out to do. I felt absolutely ill-equipped for the task. Maybe you can relate? Perhaps God has been encouraging you to do something new, to take a chance and you feel as if you are not ready for it. You may even second guess if you heard God correctly. And if you did, why would He call you to be the one to do this? Isn’t there anyone else God could call?
Well friend, this is where we find Joshua ,the son of Nun, as God charged him to become the new leader of the children of Israel. Moses had gotten old and died. It was now up to Joshua to lead the children of Israel into the promise land. Can you imagine how Joshua must have felt? I can. How often does God call us to do something and we are afraid because we don’t trust that we are up to the task? After a leader like Moses, Joshua surely must have felt inadequate and unprepared for what was ahead. We can tell by the fact that God had to remind him three times in the same conversation not to be afraid. And these were reminders of what Moses had already told Joshua in Deuteronomy 31:1-3. God reminded Joshua that as long as He was with Him, Joshua was equipped to do whatever God called Him to do. Furthermore, Joshua could find all the courage he needed in God’s presence.
Friend, when God calls you and I to something new, something big, something seemly impossible, He equips us just as He calls us. Success and victory is already ours when God is with us. We have nothing to fear. Despite the naysayers, despite any obstacles in your way, God says Do not be afraid. With God, there is no reason to fear “for God has not given us a spirit of fear but of power, of love, and of a sound mind” (2 Timothy 1:7). Trust that the same God who has called you is the same God who has already equipped you. So friend, be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go. Just as God was with the great Moses, He will be with you too.
Heavenly Father, I thank you for reminding me to take courage each day. I admit that sometimes I allow fear to creep into my heart and cause me to doubt your instructions. I know fear does not come from you because your Word tells me that you have not given me a spirit of fear. I boldly claim the spirit of power, of love and of sound mind that you have for me. I receive it right now and choose to walk in your perfect peace and trusting you to lead me and to go before me. Thank you for the victory that lies ahead. Glorify yourself in my life today as you guide my path. In Jesus’ Name, amen.
