Come And Drink

“On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’” Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.” – John 7:37-39 (ESV)

Most of us know that we need a minimum of water to stay hydrated daily and survive. Some people such as myself enjoy drinking a fresh glass of water and can easily get our daily two litres while others struggle to do so. Whenever I’m thirsty, water is my first beverage of choice. Our bodies are mostly made of water and can easily become dehydrated without the proper fluid hence why we need to replenish it multiple times a day.

In the same way, we need a fresh anointing and outpouring of the Holy Spirit each day. When Jesus promised us we would never thirst again if we came to Him, He was speaking of the gift of the Holy Spirit. While the Spirit lives in us and is with us, the Lord still invites us to ask for Him regularly.

“How much more will your Heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!”(Luke 11:13)

We need Living water daily and the Spirit is this living water. It is not enough to welcome Him once into our lives and hearts. He needs to be frequently invited. Therefore, we must make room for Him in our hearts by ” [laying] aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and run with endurance the race that is set before us ” and fixing our eyes on Jesus. (Hebrews 12:1).

The Spirit within us helps us to come into the experience of new birth we need to enter the Kingdom of God. After all, Jesus, in His own words said: “truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God” (John 3:5). Amazingly, Jesus offers us the Holy Spirit at absolutely no cost.

“To the thirsty, I will give from the spring of the water of life without payment.” (Revelation 21:6b)

What an incredible gift promised by our Savior! How could we not seek after it daily?

This same Spirit is the One who reveals truth to us and empowers us to walk in the will of God. Alone, we cannot please God. In fact, without the Spirit we are always at odds with the Father as we succumb to the desires of our flesh. This is one of the many reasons why we absolutely cannot go without the Holy Spirit. As believers, He is the seal given to us as a mark of our adoption. Among many other things, He helps us in our weaknesses, intercedes for us, sanctifies us, and enables us to use the gifts we’ve been given for God’s glory. His wisdom, power, and revelations are absolutely incomparable. Who can do life without Him?

Friend, let us ask for the Holy Spirit each day so we may live in a way that pleases God and never thirst again.

Heavenly Father,  I need your Holy Spirit as much as I need air to breath and water to drink. Fill me Lord, I am completely dependent on you. Lead me by your Spirit and guide me on the path of wisdom.

In Jesus’ name
