“His divine power has given us everything required for life and godliness through the knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness” – 2 Peter 1:3 CSB
I like baking. It’s not the process that I love so much, but the finished product. Baking cakes and cupcakes are my favorite. Each time I bake, I make a list of everything I need for a successful finish: flour, eggs, milk, sugar, etc. and then run to the store to get all my ingredients. If even one is missing, the finished product never tastes quite as it should. It may look it but it does not taste as it should. However, when all the ingredients are present and added together with a perfect measure, the cake comes out just as it’s supposed to. You see the secret is in having all the ingredients at the right measure available. Though I am not an experienced baker, all I need is to make sure I have all the right ingredients, everything required to actually make a cake before I begin to put it together.
In the same way, God provides us with all the ingredients we need to live a godly life. Not one is missing. Through His divine power, He supplied everything we needed and everything we need comes through knowing Jesus. Jesus is the One who teaches us to love, have faith, joy, and self-control, be humble, live peaceably with all men, be gentle, patient, kind, and good. Jesus is the main ingredient we need to live a godly life. When we get to know Him intimately, we discover all that he offers and are equipped to live the kind of life that pleases the Father. He is the example that we must follow and the key ingredient for life. Without Him, our finished product will be a mess.
So often, we think we have to come up with the ingredients to live a godly life almost as if we needed to get to the store and acquire the ingredients to bake our cake but it is not so. God has already supplied everything that we need, everything required for life and godliness.
Everything that you and I need for today, for this life and to live in godliness is already ours! We do not have to work for it, purchase it, and try to come up with it or come up with the strength to make it happen. It’s already ours!
In our every day-to-day life, this means that we don’t have to search for things that are already ours through Jesus. Whatever we need, whether it be more strength, more love, more joy, or more patience, it is already ours in Jesus and available right now. And when Jesus lives in us, when we are the branches connected to the vine (John 15), we have everything we need, and all we need to do is rest on His promises and ask God to manifest in our lives those very things we need for life.
Without God, we would be left relying on our own strength. But thanks be to God who already knows what the final “cake” should look and taste like, so He made sure to give us all we need to live a life that honors and glorifies Him. We do not have to try to live a godly life in our own strength when God has given it to us through His strength and divine power. So don’t anxious, don’t try to make it on your own but trust God’s promises that He’s already given us everything we need to live this life for and with Him.
Dear Father God, I thank you for supplying everything I need for life and godliness through Jesus. When I question whether or not I have what it takes, please remind me that you have already made it available to me. When I try to do things in my own strength, remind me that you have all the strength I need. Thank you for helping me live my Christian life through your divine power, in Jesus’ Name, Amen.
