“Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” – Psalm 119:105
“In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God.” – John 1:1
As you walk in the path of singleness, one of the best things you could ever do is spend time with God. It is the greatest investment you can ever make and it guarantees to produce abundant dividends. By spending time in God’s Word, you can begin to look into your heavenly Father’s heart and mind to know how He thinks, and know His will.
The psalmist says in Psalm 119:105 that God’s Word is like a lamp to your feet and a light to your path. It is meant to give you direction, present the path that you must follow, and light up the way for you. When you walk in complete darkness, there is no way for you to know where you are going. But when you walk into the light, the path is made clear and you will not stumble. When you walk into the light, you can have fellowship with God because God Himself is in the light. (1 John 1:7) Don’t you think it is wonderful to be able to walk in the company of God? Can’t you picture walking with God as Enoch did? That is what true fellowship with God is all about: to be in companionship with Him. So though you may be single at the moment, you are in companionship with God during your singleness if you choose to do so.
Although walking with God is truly wonderful, it does require something of you: His word must be in you (1 John 1:10b CSB). But how will His Word be in you if you do not know it? The only way to walk with Him is to sit down, be still, and bask in His presence with His Word before you. You will be surprised how His Word will begin to change you: by beholding, you will become changed (2 Corinthians 3:18 KJV).
God wants you to spend time in His Word because that is how you will come to know Him better. By knowing His Word, you will have all the instructions for life that you need. So often, I don’t know about you but I wish life came with an instruction manual, you know like we do for cars. The truth is: it does! God’s Word is our life manual! And by knowing His manual, you will find true happiness.
“How happy are those whose way is blameless, who walk according to the Lord’s instructions!” (Psalm 119:1)
When questions arise and you don’t know where to find the answers, God has the answers. His Word has the answer to all your problems but you can’t find the answers if you do not meditate on it day and night (Psalm 1:2 CSB). God promises that if you meditate on His Word, and be careful to observe and apply what is written in it, you will prosper and succeed in whatever you do (Joshua 1:8 CSB).
A mighty weapon of warfare
In this life, whether you are single, dating or married, life is a constant battle. But it’s not a physical battle; it’s a spiritual one. Who goes to battle unarmed and unprepared? No one does, unless you want to be defeated. If you’ve ever been in the army or you know someone who is, you know they have to prepare tirelessly for a season and become familiar with every weapon in their arsenal. Well, God’s got a weapon of warfare for you too and it’s His Word. The Bible tells us that the Word of God is like a sword (Ephesian 6:17), “living and effective, and sharper than any double-edged sword, penetrating as far as the separation of soul and spirit, joints and marrow. It is able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart” (Hebrews 4:12 CSB). Wow, what a powerful weapon God has given us! And it is all at your disposal to fight the evil one in battle when he comes to attack you or set a trap for you.
A safety net
In this world, there are many teachings and doctrines circulating around. Unfortunately, many are also false. God’s Word, breathed directly from Him, will allow you to identify false teachings because you will be well acquainted with the truth. If you hide His Word in your heart, you will easily be able to identify all the counterfeits.
“Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirit whether they are of God: because many false prophets [and false doctrines] are gone out into the world.” (1 John 4:1 KJV)
God’s love letter to you
Beyond all that we mentioned earlier, there are many more reasons to spend time in God’s Word. However, the most compelling reason of all is that God’s precious Word is holy and it is His love letter to you.
If you are like me, you probably loved writing or reading love notes that your crush in elementary school used to pass along in class to you. You most likely back then knew those love notes by heart and could quote them to your friends. Well, this is God’s love notes/letters to you. When you become familiar with it, when you study it, you will be amazed at how your life will change as you apply all you learned from them. Most of all, you will be absolutely convinced of how much God loves you. So, begin to read and study His love letter to you now. And when you need to be reminded of it most (to remember your identity, be encouraged, face hard times or fight the good fight of faith), the Holy Spirit will bring it back to your memory.
