“But God who is rich in mercy because of his great love that he had for us, made us alive with Christ even though we were dead in trespasses. You are saved by grace!” – Ephesians 2:4-5
For a believer, especially a new believer, it can be hard or perplexing to accept the fact that salvation comes by grace through faith alone. After all, we are so used to having to do things in this world that the concept of grace is completely counter intuitive as well as counter cultural.
We work for good grades in school. We work to put food on the table. We do things to please our friends and family. Each day, we strive to accomplish things many of which have no eternal value. Do, do, do! That’s what we’re used to. However, here’s the truth: there was and still is absolutely nothing that we can do to save ourselves. Our good deeds would not have made a dent in our ability to be saved for eternal life in light of our track record with sin.
God the Father knew that and that is exactly why He sent His Son Jesus to live a sinless life (which we could not do) and be the perfect sacrifice to take away all our debt and sin. His love for us propelled Him to give us new life even though we had long been dead in our sins.
Jesus is the Savior we never knew we desperately needed. While the enemy of our souls sought to destroy us, God’s image bearers, Jesus already had a plan to rescue us and offers us salvation free of charge.
We didn’t deserve it.
We could not earn it.
We had absolutely no rights to it.
Yet, we received it by placing our faith in the only name that saves.
It’s grace that saves us: the unmerited, underserved and favor of God. Grace is God’s gift to us, to be received in faith and with gratitude. It is one of those rare gifts that keeps on giving because God never runs out of it, offering it generously to all.
As you freely received it from the Lord, freely extend it to others remembering how you once walked in darkness but thanks be to God for this gift of grace that now allows us to have fellowship with the Light.
By grace through faith you have been saved…
